The mechanical engineering company Kalmar Verkstad started in 1902 as as a workshop for the railways in the Kalmar region. In 1990 the company was sold to ABB, at the time mainly producing rolling stock and trucks. The truck manufacturing division, which survived under the name Kalmar Industries, is still active and has since 2005 been a part of Finnish Cargotec. The manufacture of railway vehicles was taken over by Canadian Bombardier, but was discontinued in 2005. Kalmar Verkstad is also known for its production of the classic Swedish mail truck "Tjorven".
